QUESTIONS

Choose a theme / score to improvise on. After you have done, draw a map of your journey. Name all the patterns of your exploration.

Like a detective following clues of the patterns, ask yourself: what is the deeper question of this improvisation? Where do patterns lead me? What are the patterns that restrict me, limit me, diminish my choices? Which pattern opens up a space of possibilities? How can I get there? For example, how can I move to a bigger space? How can I release the tension in my body that holds me back from flowing with the world? How can I step into the unknown without fear and expectations?

Ask your question out loud, into an empty space. Step in.

See which image comes up as a portal to lead you deeper into the work. Allow the previous story to reconfigure itself. Moving between images that arise from within you, allow the time and space to warp, abandon linearity.

What understandings unravel from this embodied exploration?

Write them down, draw them, map them out. Give a name to your journey.

Partner work.

Doer moves, witness notices what attracts their attention. Change roles.

Witness moves with what attracts their attention from doer’s dancing, doer observes and notices the patterns.

Doer moves with the patterns, witness notices the question.

Witness dances the question, doer notices their question.

Doer asks the question outloud and dances it.

Witness witnesses the dance, and when the doer is finished, opens the dance with words, speaking in the present tense, in the “I” form, unfolding a deeper meaning of the movement.

Everyone works on their own image, maps their journey, names patterns and forms a question.

One question is brought into space.

Each participant reformulates the question.

Listen to how each of the questions reflects another perspective.

Listen to which question resonates the most with the original questor.

Everyone works on their own image, maps their journey, names patterns and forms a question.

Take your question for a walk outside of the studio, follow what attracts your attention to choose a direction to continue walking.

See where your walk takes you and note any understandings that arise.
